LGBTQIA+ Adolescents
LGBTQIA+ Adolescents
“It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.”
– e e cummings
I offer support to LGBTQIA+ youth and their families.
Teens, I can talk to your parents. Every teen experiences the pressures of high school, college, family, puberty, peers, and the beginnings of adult responsibility, but as queer youth, you face more. Your family may not understand, and you may be bullied or misgendered. I can help as you come out, explore who you are, and possibly help your parents find acceptance.
Parents, of course you worry for your child. LGBTQIA+ teens are at far higher risk for bullying and internal distress, but your love and protection don’t always reach the schoolyard, skate park, hang out spot, clothing store, medical office, or place of worship. Maybe you have your own uncertainties about your child’s identity. I can provide education, resources, discuss your fears, and help you create a safe environment where your child can question their identity at their own pace.
I work with individuals age 13 or older and their families. I am here to help you (teens) or your child (parents) become a happy adult.
Our world can be unkind, but we are not powerless. We see LGBTQIA+ adolescents targeted by political agents to further a culture war. Informed by bigotry and hate, malicious operators spread misinformation and disinformation to encourage fear, doubt, and even physical and legislative violence.
An extensive body of rigorous, longstanding research consistently reinforces the same conclusion: disaffirming environments cause harm, and youth in these settings are at high risk of anxiety, depression, poor school performance and school dropout, poor physical health, smoking, substance use and abuse, self-harm, and even suicidality.
But these studies also make plain that in a healthy, safe world where LGBTQIA+ youth feel validated and are able to explore their identities without judgment, they can thrive.
Together we can help your child build resilience, confidence, and create a supportive environment in the home and elsewhere.
